The birth of the smiley emoticon was born twenty five years ago, at 11:44am EDT on September 19, 1982.

    Slightly OT but it's interesting to study emotions across cultures to pick up on the primary visual clues they consider important. For example, western cultures express a lot of emotion by smiling, frowning and etc. Eyes usually stay fixated as colon, while the mouth alternates:

    :) :( :O :|

    Common Japanese emoticons on the other hand put more emphasis on the eyes while keeping the mouth fixed:
